During the UBS Global Technology Conference 2017, EA’s chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen noted that “Less and less of our business is dependent on brand new titles.” This follows on from EA’s recent suggestion that FIFA and Madden may drop annual releases in favor of regularly updated games with live services.
But despite this shift in EA’s business, the publisher is not yet ready to ditch new game releases across the board. Jorgensen explained that “we’ve been able to bring out some great new titles that have turned into franchises, like the Star Wars activity, like Battlefront, for example, that layer in more franchises over time.” Jorgensen continued, “We’re trying to do that with BioWare’s Anthem game,” adding that the game looks “very exciting” and that BioWare has done an “amazing job.”
EA previously said that Anthem would be a 10-year journey, similar to Activision and Bungie’s connected shooter, Destiny. Those looking forward to the new BioWare game will be glad to know that multiple Anthem games are planned for that decade-long span, not just expansion packs and post-launch DLC.
Releasing multiple games in the franchise will hopefully give BioWare a chance to address any feedback and concerns that arise. This is what DICE, Motive, and Criterion were able to do with Star Wars Battlefront 2, introducing a story campaign after fans criticized the lack of single-player in its predecessor.
However, opting to release multiple games that make big, sweeping changes can also lead to other problems. For example, Star Wars Battlefront 2 introduced controversial loot boxes as multiplayer progression was given an overhaul. Fans may fear that the jump between Anthem and Anthem 2 could result in similar shifts and changes that spoil the experience. BioWare will have to work hard in order to convince fans that it has their best interests at heart.
As Jorgensen’s comments indicate, EA is very enthusiastic about Anthem and its potential to become a huge franchise. So the company is probably well aware of any potential pratfalls. As there’s still a while to go yet until the game’s release hopefully EA and BioWare will reveal more on their plans for Anthem and its future in the coming months.
Anthem is currently scheduled to release sometime in the fall of 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
