The final mission in Dying Light 2 builds to a pivotal choice. Villedor is under threat from the impending missile launch and the only key to stopping it has just been discarded into an acid pit as a result of the battle with Waltz. Aiden is reeling from the truth of his past and forced to face the consequences of his actions when the player is prompted with a final choice.

Stopping the missiles from launching is still possible, but it requires manually attaching and detonating bombs inside the facility. Lawan has attached the bombs and is willing to make the sacrifice. The choice of this final decision will set the stage for the final moments of Dying Light 2 and shape the future of Villedor forever.

Spoilers Ahead

What Happens If You Let Lawan Sacrifice Herself?

If the player commits to allowing Lawan to sacrifice herself, they share a heartfelt goodbye via walkie-talkie before Waltz succumbs to his wounds beside Mia. The player is then prompted to take Mia and escape from X13. The countdown begins, and Aiden and Mia rush to the exit just as the explosion erupts from the facility and knocks them unconscious.

Lawan’s fate, in this instance, is determined by whether or not Hakon survives. Earlier in the game, the player has the option to spare Hakon after seeing damning evidence that he is responsible for the murder of the Peacekeeper’s former police chief. Saving him means that he shows up again in a sort of quasi-betrayal in this last phase of the game, but he comes around and apologizes to you and Lawan for his wanton ways. However, redemption isn’t the only reason to spare Hakon. If Hakon survives, he will save Lawan from the ultimate sacrifice by helping her to escape the facility just in time before the detonation destroys it.

If Aiden leaves Hakon to die, however, Hakon still comes back but this time with a vengeance too big to be talked down. Lawan does not escape X13 and is instead left inside when the missiles explode. All of this information is relayed through title cards that detail other differences depending on the player’s other major choices throughout the game.

What Happens If You Save Lawan?

Saving Lawan may seem like the more selfish choice to some players, but Aiden’s connection to Lawan throughout the story should seem palpable to people considering this option. Aiden promised Frank on his deathbed (assuming Frank dies, but that is a story for another guide) that Lawan would be safe, and staying true to that promise may be the wisest decision for Aiden even if it’s not the wisest decision for Villedor.

The player will be prompted to rush to Lawan after making this decision. Through some adept parkouring, Aiden will reach Lawan where a cutscene will begin that shows them briefly struggling. Aiden begins to turn at this point, and a scary interaction nearly leads him to kill her before he regains some of his cognitive faculties. Aiden then uses his enhanced abilities to rush to the top of X13 with Lawan slung over his shoulder. They escape through a hatch just as the missiles launch and head forth to destroy Villedor as the screen cuts to black.

The title cards will once again detail the conclusion of the story depending on the other choices the player has made up to this point. Lawan survives. But it is at the cost of Villedor being essentially destroyed and Mia being left to die in the facility. The streets of Villedor are seen in disarray as people cry out for help. The Fish Eye Canteen did miraculously survive though, so that must count for something.

The Epilogue

No matter what ending is selected, the epilogue will play out largely the same. Spike enters the Fish Eye Canteen to inquire about Aiden (Remember Spike? He was the other pilgrim that helped through the game’s tutorial). The bartender will inform him that Aiden has since moved on. If the player saves Lawan, the bartender will say he found what he was looking for, “in a way,” and that he chose to save Lawan above all else.

If the player saves Villedor, the bartender will say that he did in fact find his sister, but she expired a few hours after leaving the facility. He also says that the people of Villedor owe their lives to him. Mia’s death is unfortunately inevitable regardless of the character’s choices. There is good news though! If the player had given control of the radio tower to Frank and had Hakon survive to get Lawan out of the explosion in time, Lawan will join Aiden on the road.

There is another ‘secret’ ending of sorts that also involves having given control of the radio tower to Frank. If the player spares Hakon and chooses to save Lawan, Lawan will remain in the city, but Hakon will accompany Aiden on the road outside Villedor. Regardless of the dialogue overlaying the scene, Aiden is shown wandering away from Villedor, whether it be destroyed or intact, off to find a new adventure.
