The beta version of the custom map editor can be accessed by downloading the Dying Light 2 Developer Tools, which is available on the game’s Steam and Epic Games Store pages. The full release of the editor will be implemented in the console editions of the game as well and is expected sometime in 2023. In the meantime, the current beta version is more than sufficient to build some interesting and creative custom maps.

To promote the beta release of custom map support in Dying Light 2, Techland has teamed up with mod.io to hold the “Shape Your City” contest with a $50,000 prize pool. From now through January 20, 2023, anybody can enter for a chance to win one of 12 prizes. There will be 10 rewards of $5,000 each, one ASUS ROG laptop for the creator who gains the most unique subscribers, and AMD will select another person to win a 6800XT GPU and Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU. Winners will be announced on February 2.
Those who wish to participate in the “Shape Your City” contest and want a real chance at winning won’t be tossed in blind. Techland has provided a short tutorial video that demonstrates the basics of the Dying Light 2 map editor and takes viewers through the creation of a sample project. But anybody who has previous experience with map editors or 3D modeling likely won’t have too high of a learning curve.
Techland has been very active in keeping the community engaged and promoting the game, which came out in February 2022. Along with the Dying Light 2 Bloody Ties DLC that released in November, the developer has already held contests for best creative writing, fan art, and game-themed costumes. The rewards for those competitions did not approach the impressive prize pool for the custom map contest, however.
Dying Light 2 is set in 2036, 22 years after the events of the first game, and introduces a new protagonist named Aiden Caldwell. This time, rather than being confined to a single city, the mutated virus that caused a second zombie outbreak spread globally and left human civilization in tatters. While the sequel has been just as well received as its predecessor, many fans are disgruntled that Dying Light 2 never definitively explains what happened to Kyle Crane, the parkouring hero of the first game. This may be because Dying Light The Following DLC has two possible endings, both of which make it fairly clear what happened to him.
Dying Light 2 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
